LittleBigPlanet: First Impressions

According to – The publisher has brought to our attention that the release of LittleBigPlanet will be delayed to November 4. As soon as we receive an updated release date the site will be changed to reflect that information. Thank you for your patience. Well, I’ve got the game – so no patience required from me. Well, guess I am one of the few lucky ones who are playing the game right here right now. Got my copy while I was in Hong Kong and not many shops have them too. So, that’s the best thing that I’ve bought on my trip.

Played the first few levels of this game. The graphics are awesome. Colors are vibrant. My only complain – the movement controls could be better. Then again, maybe its still new and need some getting used to. As the game is delayed, so is the online play. As seen in the photo above, am unable to connect to the LittleBigPlanet servers at the moment.

The first level is called The Gardens. Its basically a tutorial stage where you will learn basic tricks like running, jumping, grabbing and swinging about. Oh yeah, and loads of stickers collection along the way as well. Your abilities to change your appearance, unlock stages and perform tricks depends on what stickers you have at your disposal. There are some stickers in the form of a key which you can use to unlock sub or bonus levels – so do look out for them.

According to the booklet, to meet new friends online and gain access to MyMoon and the InfoMoon, you’ll need to complete the first three levels in The Gardens. The first person to enter a level automatically becomes the host and between levels their personalized POD (Control Station) will become the group’s lobby. If the host chooses to go somewhere – be it from the POD to a level or from a level to the POD – all other players automatically follow.

Players invited to join the group will not become hosts. If anyone leaves the group, all players will be asked if they would like to follow that particular player. You can see who you are following in the player Management Screen. If you see any offensive content, please report them at the Good Grief! Menu by pressing the SELECT button at any time and the Good Grief! Menu will be displayed.

Press R1 to grab things and hold down X button to speed things up. In the picture above, you are required to grab those barrels to weigh down a barrel holder in order to lower the platform blocking your way forward. To fly, just go near a jetpack and you will be up in the air in no time. To boost, hold down X button. To fly and grab things, press R1 and hold down X. With the jetpack, you can fly up and down to collect stickers on roof tops or trees which will be impossible to reach otherwise. To stop using the jet pack, just shake your controller to remove it.

You can create your own stickers after collecting a sticker with a camera icon. But as with any capabilities in LittleBigPlanet, you have to have the right stickers. So, the more stickers you collect along the way, the more abilities or costumes you will unlock. There are some keys hidden throughout the levels, which can be used to unlock sub levels or bonus rounds, so do look out for them. Some of them are very well hidden.

When you see giant tv screens such as this, hop onto the red button to learn about new capabilities or what you are required to do. You can control Sackboy’s facial expressions by pressing the up, down, left or right keys on the controller. Holding both R1 and R2 will enable you to control Sackboy’s hands movement.

Visually, LittleBigPlanet is the game that sets the Playstation 3 apart – you’ll just have to see it to believe it. Details and physics are just mind blowing. If Mario is Nintendo’s saviour – then Sackboy is Sony’s.

This game does look really good to me even though I’m more into the action packed games I think that this is something I’m going to look in to.
