The Next iMac: Blu-ray Ready?

It’s been a long time coming, but will Apple finally be showing Blu-ray some love? It’s currently being rumored that the next iMac update includes Blu-ray read and write capability. The HD-format war has ended and Blu-ray discs showed gaining momentum and support according to DEG (Digital Entertainment Group) which reported a 91 percent increase in sales of Blu-ray titles – bringing the total to US$407 million.

In comparison – rentals and sales of digital media through outlets like iTunes, Xbox Live, and Amazon totaled US$968 million in the first half of the year – more than double the revnue from Blu-ray sales.

amz-bd-titlesBased on these sales figures – I don’t see any reason for Apple to bring Blu-ray capabilities to it’s range of personal computers. It’s a good to have feature, but not essential. I for one, would fall into the “good to have” supporter. I hope Apple would bring Blu-ray sooner, than later or never at all.
