App Store: Tokyo Underground

I love this Tokyo Underground App from Presselite. It costs US$0.99 but well worth the purchase price. I’ll be heading to Tokyo for Christmas and this time, I’ll be able to navigate the rail transport more efficiently. I know my way around Tokyo – afterall, it’s my favorite city in the world. But with this app, I can now commute in a more efficient and less time consuming manner. It’s integration with Google Map providing ability to direct you to the nearest station based on your position while it updates live via GPS and iPhone 3GS’s built-in compass as one walks the streets of Tokyo is nothing short of amazing. More after the break:

The basic Metro map is included. To see it, just launch the map and click on the first icon at the bottom left. You’ll be able to zoom and pan to see more of the map. Clicking on the second icon, Lines – you’ll see all the lines available in the vicinity of Tokyo. Clicking on Stations, you’ll see the complete list of stations on all lines. Clicking on one of them will pull up info about that station and which line it belongs to. The last 2 icons, Locate and Route is where you’ll get your money’s worth. Clicking Locate, basically iPhone will get your exact location on the map. Route – this is the best part for me. I can now plan my route by entering the starting point followed by destination. For illustration, I’ll start off at Ueno and make my way to Tokyo station. The app will show me the following info:

With the info provided, I know I will need to take the Yamanote Line from Ueno and head to Tokyo station with an estimated time of 17 minutes. If you are going further – it will provide step by step instructions on which station to alight and connect to. It will even show the route on the Metro Map – with different color codes indicating your starting point and destination. Pretty useful for tourists like me. If you wanna get more kick out of this app – you can purchase add ons to this App in the form of Point Of Interest (POI). These options allow you to activate American Style Restaurants POI, Japanese Style Restaurants POI, Coffee, Pastry & Ice Cream POI, Leisure POI and Convenience Stores POI in Tokyo. You will be able to locate all nearby POI on Google Map.

For example, you’re walking along Akihabara and need to locate the nearest StarBucks. With the Coffee, Pastry & Ice Cream POI – these outlets will appear in your map. Neat huh? Each POI will cost you another US$0.99 but for me – it’s worth it. Presselite also has similar Apps for other cities like New York, Paris, London, Berlin, Toronto, Beijing, Hong Kong etc. All for a mere US$0.99 each. If you’re heading to one of those cities and being an iPhone user – check them out at the App Store.
