Maxis, Contract Free iPhone 3GS Is Back!

Good news for those who are waiting to get a contract free iPhone 3GS from Maxis. You can now grab one at your nearest Maxis outlets and there’s no 30-day waiting period too. But each iPhone 3GS must be accompanied with a Hotlink prepaid pack which you can choose not to use or just enjoy the free 500Mb monthly data for 12 months that comes with it. Retail price – RM2990 for a 32Gb and RM2490 for the 16Gb unit.

Too bad I saw this only after purchasing a 16GB black model in an Epicentre store in Singapore last week.

Good thing that the APN field is active and I managed to enter diginet into it.

Typing this from my iPhone :).

    Tethering is not available, though.

Yeah, I read in the local forums that Maxis disabled the APN settings on the new batch of phones. Not sure if that’s confirmed. If it is, thought Malaysian Telcos are not supposed to lock phones sold here? Hmmmmm ….

Contractless is still not contractless. Here’s what the T&C says:

Purchase of iPhone must be accompanied with any of the above contracted rate plans. Maxis reserves the right to rescind some of the privileges of the rate plans should the registered line not be used with the purchased iPhone.

    Refer to:

So I don’t think they’ll let me keep the unlimited data plan.

    Ach. Prepaid.

I am assuming that once that phone is bought, you can just slot in the postpaid sim that you already have.

That is correct. And you can choose not to use the Prepaid line. But it comes with free 500Mb data per month for the next 12 months. Personally, it’s not worth risking using it as you already have an Unlimited Data plan for RM99.

You’re right. Because if you exceed the free monthly limit, all hell breaks loose.

There’s another problem. I heard from a friend that Maxis has ended this prepaid iPhone offer. The website is not so up-to-date.

Perhaps they couldn’t get the monthly postpaid/data revenue with prepaid – other telco users just swapped in other sims.

Best to just give them a call at 123. But if you’re willing to pay the full contract free retail prize, why not just grab one off which are Maxis and new units? Maybe a small premium fee applies, but at least its Maxis unit and new.
